We found this gem while leaving Florida, where we spent most of our time at the Thousand Trails in Orlando and at Peace River in Wauchula, heading for Texas. Since there were some storms and flooding recently we got a discount on our cavern tour and there was only one other group there, a school group who was leaving as we were coming.
We learned about the formations in the caverns, as well as the geography of the area, and the role the CCC had in the park. We saw where formations cracked due to settling of the earth below, and how some formations repaired themselves over time. Formations grow about 1 square inch every hundred years so we can estimate when the earth had settled.
The kids drew their favorite formations and took notes. They asked some good questions, too.
In the visitor center, a volunteer was more than happy to share her knowledge of the plants and animals of the area and play show and tell with her mini-zoo. She had a dead wolf spider but we did see a few at the entrances of the caverns. Gross. Creepy. scary. Even the tour guide ducked and ran through the cavern entrance quickly so as not to disturb the wolf spider. Apparently, bugs are plentiful for them there. We also saw a bat fly by in the cavern.
And to every beast of the earth and to every bird of the heavens and to everything that creeps on the earth, everything that has the breath of life, I have given every green plant for food. And it was so. Genesis 1:30
The Lord is good to all, and His mercy is over all that is made. Psalm 145:9
Who teaches us more than the beasts of the earth and makes us wiser than the birds of the heavens? Job 35:11
"The wolf and the lamb shall graze together; the lion shall eat straw like the ox, and dust shall be the serpent's food. They shall not hurt or destroy in all my holy mountain," says the Lord. Isaiah 65:25
Isn't that an awesome thought for our future. That all will live in peace, side by side? Hallelujah and amen. No more fearing wolf spiders ... or any other such thing. =]
